Chives are a hardy, versatile herb with a gentle onion taste – perfect in salads, egg dishes, soups, and more. It grows densely and thrives in the Auk.

In short:

  • Sow 20–40 seeds per pot – chives grow in tight bunches.

  • Keep the temperature steady around 20–24 °C / 68 – 75 °F for best germination.

  • Seeds sprout in 7–14 days.

  • Ready for harvest in 4–6 weeks.

  • Can live for several months in Auk with regular trimming and good care.

  • Great for indoor growing or as a seedling starter.

Sow 20–40 seeds and press them gently into the coconut fiber

How to do it:

  • Fill the pots with coconut fiber (one pack is enough for all pots).

  • Spread the seeds evenly across the surface.

  • Gently press them into the fiber.

  • Sprouts will appear in 7–14 days if the temperature stays steady (around 20–24 °C / 68 – 75 °F).

Start harvesting after 4–6 weeks (cut whole stalks, leaving about 5 cm)

Chives are ready for harvest in 4–6 weeks and can handle frequent trimming:

  • Use scissors to cut the stalks about 5 cm above the coconut fiber.

  • Frequent harvesting encourages stronger, denser growth.

  • Avoid trimming the entire plant at once — always leave at least ⅔ of the stalks to ensure healthy regrowth.

Start in Auk and repot after 4–6 weeks (once it’s 8–10 °C / 46–50 °F or warmer)

Want to grow chives outside? Start them in Auk and repot when conditions allow:

  • Repot when the plants have developed a good root system (after 4–6 weeks).

  • Be gentle with the roots when moving them to a new pot or the garden.

  • Nighttime temperatures should be stable above 8–10 °C / 46–50 °F.

In temperate or mild climates, chives can survive winter outdoors and often regrow the following spring.

Fun fact 🌿

Chives have a mild, rounded onion flavor — without the harsh aroma or bitterness of regular onions. Perfect when you want to add a subtle onion note without overpowering a dish!

Good luck and enjoy growing! 💚
